My Stoic Thoughts: Day Seven Stoic Week 2020

Stoic Week 2020

Sunday, October 25th, 2020

Theme:  Nature

Stoics believed the universe exhibited qualities that provide humans with moral norms to live a good life.  The qualities attributed to Nature were order, structure, rationality, and providential care.  I don’t know if this is something I believe or not.  To me, it feels too much like geometry homework…explaining how things work instead of focusing on what is happening right in front of you.  (I’m an algebra gir).  I’m not sold on the idea, but I can see where the ancient Stoics were coming from.

Where I do agree is that human beings; you, me, and those around us, are part of the Natural world.  Whether or not Nature itself has these qualities, we as humans certainly do display order, structure, rationality, and care for others.  It’s part of who we are as humans.  As a part of Nature, we are connected to the whole.  Our moral actions and living a good life affect the grand whole.  Our character, our actions, and ultimately who we are not only impacts our own lives, but also those we love, our community, and the world at large.

Each person is like a drop of weather in a pond.  From the drop, our character, we ripple outward, touching the lives of others.  In the same way, we are affected by the ripples of others.  Our expression of virtue and the way we live a good life influences each other because we are all connected.  We can ripple virtue and put good into the world by caring for others and our environment or we can ripple vice and cause harm.  I, for one, choose virtue.  In the small ways I can, I aim and hope to put out more good into the world.

(This is a brief summary of my thoughts inspired by prompts during Stoic Week and do not fully encompass everything on Stoic resilience.  I highly encourage you to learn more, leave comments, and add to this conversation!)

With havin so much content do you ever run into any problems of
plagorism or copyright violation? My website has a lot of exclusive content I’ve either written myself or outsourced
but it looks like a lot of it is popping it up all over the web without my permission. Do you
know any methods to help reduce content from being ripped off?
    I’d genuinely appreciate it.
