Would I Benefit From Counseling

If you are asking the question, “would I benefit from counseling?” then the answer is yes. I personally believe that anyone can benefit from counseling.   We are all human beings with worries, challenges, and struggles. We all hit tough times that we have difficulty navigating. Counseling can help us become unstuck and find our way, even when we feel like we’ve tried everything.  It can help us enhance a relationship or circumstance and make it great. Perhaps, there are two paths you could take but it’s likely to affect many of your loved ones. Counseling can help by providing you with a someone not involved in the situation to help you sort through it all.  Counseling can be beneficial to us to navigate life after a break up, adjust to new life stages such as a new baby, or even help you to obtain a satisfying sexual relationship with your significant other(s).

Sometimes we face challenges that minorly affect one or two areas of our lives and we could probably manage them on our own, but some extra help couldn’t hurt. At other times, we face more serious challenges which threaten to consume every aspect of our lives.  Sometimes our problems impact our daily life functioning, social relationships, performance at work, and our self-esteem. Counseling has the ability to help your with any problem, big or small.

While we all might benefit from counseling at some point in our lives, only you can determine when that might be.  Below are some questions you might ask yourself to determine if now is the right time for you:

  • Is this problem impacting several areas of my life (i.e. relationships, work, leisure, self-esteem)?
  • Is most of my day consumed by the problem evident in thoughts or behaviors?
  • Have you tried everything you can think of to solve the problem with no improvements?
  • Has the problem gotten to be too much for you to handle on your own?

These are just a few example questions to help guide you in determining  whether you could benefit from counseling. Deep down, you’ll know. You are the expert on your life, what you can handle, and when you need to reach out.  And with that expertise, you hold the key to your own well-being.
